Setting up the repository...

First, open your /etc/apt/sources.list in an editor.

sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list

Then, insert one of these lines (each are various mirrors, and you can get deb-src from them too if you wish.)

deb http://www.beerorkid.com/compiz dapper main
deb http://ubuntu.compiz.net/ dapper main

If you use aiglx, add ' aiglx' to the end of the line (so it reads 'main aiglx')

Then, save and exit the editor and run one of these commands (again, various mirrors) to add my key.

wget http://www.beerorkid.com/compiz/quinn.key.asc -O - | sudo apt-key add -
wget http://ubuntu.compiz.net/quinn.key.asc -O - | sudo apt-key add -

Then, use the repository as usual. The useful packages are compiz, compiz-gnome, and compiz-kde.

I usually used dualboot between Windows and ubuntu and use a default document editor; MS office and OpenOffice, respectively.

The problem is I suddenly upgraded MS office from 2000 to 2003 to sad me to recovery my document!! which is so importhat and too many page (upt0 50 pages) The format and informantion lost!!!!!! OMG! but I could slept!

Overnight!!! I got the idea that I have to convert a new new name via OOo OpenOffice.org, that it I boot Ubuntu and run OOo and then open my problem file ... it take a lot of time .. you know it scared me!! .............

Suddently,, it opened !! OMG!! It still alive!! then I resave in the format of .doc (NT/98/2000/XP) whatever..

Now I can recovered my document.. and now Thanks for OOo to helped me and I agree with .odt right now.!! keep trying to do the same thing in different environtment!!

After complained about the ubuntu speed that too slow during working with Firefox, Now I have compared the partition used between my WindowsXP and Ubuntu-

As you know Ubuntu or other linux provides single CD with full general appropiate software to people use.. Wherease, Windows have to find a several software to fullfilled! and now event there are a bit different about software but you see, Windows take alot of area in similar size between these OS.

And-- This is my "Gray" theme which I think it's awesome!!

After being noticed by QuinnStorm (of XGL/compiz repo fame), some patches were added to the .deb and she put it to her repo. The patches include:

Changing the word 'Computer' to 'Menu'
Replacing the little computer icon with the Ubuntu logo
Schemas added
'Recently Used Applications' replaced with 'Places'
'Install Software' correctly opens synaptic

If you don't already use her repo for XGL (which you should), here are quick instructions:

sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list

Add this line to the bottom:

deb http://xgl.compiz.info/ dapper main

Then open the terminal and type these 2 lines to add the gpg keys:

gpg --keyserver subkeys.pgp.net --recv-keys 0x31a5f97fed8a569e
gpg --export --armor 0x31a5f97fed8a569e | sudo apt-key add -

And finally do:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

The SLED menu is listed as 'gnome-main-menu', just 'sudo apt-get install' it:

sudo apt-get install gnome-main-menu gcontrol

Then when you right-click and choose 'Add to Panel', you will have the 'Main Menu' choice in the Misceleneous sectio

The latest contribution to GNOME by Novell has been the menu overhaul known as 'SLAB' in their upcoming commercial distribution SLED. If you want to try it out you don't have to download and install the SLED pre-release you can add it to Ubuntu. Just like XGL, SLAB is open source.

First we need to take care of some dependencies. Open your terminal and type this (all one line):

sudo apt-get install libgnome-desktop-dev libpanel-applet2-dev
libgtop2-dev libdbus-glib-1-dev network-manager-dev libhal-storage-dev
libiw-dev libgnome-menu-dev libresmgr-dev libavahi-core-dev banshee
f-spot mono

Next download and install this .deb file made by cbudden here.

Then download and install slab.schemas.zip and extract it to your Desktop and do this in your terminal:

cd ~/Desktop
gconftool --install-schema-file=slab.schemas

Now when you right-click on your panel up top and choose 'add to panel' you will notice that in the 'Miscellaneous' section there is an option called 'Main Menu'... this is the one-button SLAB menu. You will also notice that there is now a control panel for Ubuntu. Right-click on programs and 'add to favorites' or drag and drop to modify it.

I played around with my panels a little but my top panel still seems so bare!

If you want to check out the cvs source and try to compile it:

cvs -z3 -d :pserver:anonymous@anoncvs.gnome.org:/cvs/gnome login
(hit enter for password)

I've been making a Vista-looking theme for Compiz Themer, and now it's ready to be posted here, in the Compiz forum! I'm makin other modifications too, so the project name is Vista-Linux, now!
Some modifications needs you to reboot your Linux.

Look this pic:

To get your panel with less opacity, just hold and move your mouse scroll.

Put the arquive .gtkrc-2.0 that is in the attachements in your personal folder and overwrite the original (if it exists) to get your Gnome-Panel fonts white and visible.

Installation

Compiz works fine on any videocard supporting Directx 9.0 and pixelshaders. This is known to work well on Nvidia Geforce FX >= 5200 and ATI >= 95xx. Compiz will also run on older or non 3d accelerated hardware, but not without choppy/slow effects and possibly freezes.

Guide: Xgl and Compiz under Breezy by Milamber_Cubed

Hi all.

I just thought I would share my experiences of getting Xgl and Compiz working on my laptop under Breezy. It is a bit slow, but not much worse (if any) than when I was using the live CD for Dapper Flight 3 and got it working on that. The slowness is down to the i810 driver as far as I can tell. And maybe the fact that my graphics card has only 8MB of RAM

I am not sure how this will affect systems running on graphics hardware other than i810 driven ones, but I advise that you follow my guide (such as it is :S ) and look to the Nvidia/ATI Specific threads in the Dapper Development forum for specific xorg.conf settings before trying to get Xgl to run in the final couple of steps.

Before we start - I CAN'T BE HELD RESPONSIBLE IF THIS MESSES UP YOUR INSTALL!

EDIT 1 - Feb 21st - added libxcomposite1 to required packages.

EDIT 2 - RPMS were removed from suse server... put them in own web space and updated guide

EDIT 3 - Feb 22nd - Added info about newer RPMS. And clarified ln -s step for fonts folder

EDIT 4 - Feb 23rd - Removed link to newer SuSE RPMS - Couldn't get them working...

EDIT 5 - Apr 15th - Changed link for extra compiz libs - wget to forum attachments no longer works. Put in direct link to my web space

First thing to do is get the rpms that were put out by SuSE (hosted on my web sapce ), convert them to debs and then install them. THESE ARE i586 RPMS - I DON'T KNOW WHAT WILL HAPPEN IF YOUR CPU DOESN'T MEET THIS REQUIREMENT!!

Then we make sure we have all the things we need to make it all work

Then we make a links/copies so that Xgl finds things in the places it expects them:

sudo cp /usr/lib/libdrm.so.1 /usr/lib/libdrm.so.2

Now we edit the gdm configuration file - making a backup first, just in case

sudo cp gdm.conf gdm.conf.backup
sudo gedit gdm.conf

Look in the file for an uncommented line that says "0=Standard".
Comment it out and add the following:

0=Xgl

NOTE - I think that ati users may need to make this "1=Xgl" - check the ATI thread for details.

then add the following to the very end of the file:

and now save the file. (Again, the exact format the "command" line will depend on your hardware - this works for me with the intel i810 driver)

Now do the following steps to create a script to load compiz with the correct settings:

and paste the following into it and save it

Save the file and then we make it executable

You would think that we are now ready to go, but you would be wrong... for some reason some of the libraries didn't load properly on Breezy, so I copied them from my Dapper install an all worked fine I uploaded them on another thread, so they are available for download..

Okay, so now you need to try and make sure that your xorg.conf file is set up properly. I will attach mine so that i810 users can compare - people using a different driver, you know what I am going to say - CHECK THE THREAD RELEVANT TO YOUR HARDWARE IN THE DAPPER FORUM. Okay, so after checking out your xorg.conf file and making any changes needed, you are ready to try it out. If the next step doesn't work or if you want to stop using Xgl, all you need to do is change the correct part of the /etc/gdm/gdm.conf file to look like this:

and everything should be back as it was before you started playing

okay, so to test - you need to log out, switch to a terminal (ctrl+alt+f1) and do the following:

sudo killall gdm
#Wait a few seconds for this to happen
sudo killall gdm
#if this has worked you should get a message like "no process killed"
#if not keep doing the killall command until it does then do
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start

This SHOULD bring up your normal login screen - log in as normal. Once logged in, open a terminal and run "thefuture". Note any error output in case it doesn't work.

That's it!!! You should be up and running with Xgl and Compiz - Enjoy!

4. Compiz-aiglx start script

To have an optimised video playing on xorg-aiglx :

-> if you have totem-gstreamer :
launch gstreamer-properties and select on default video playback "XWindow (NoXv)" in video tab.

-> if you have totem-xine :
edit ~/.gnome2/totem_config and replace this line :

First, open your /etc/apt/sources.list in an editor.

sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list

Then, insert one of these lines (each are various mirrors, and you can get deb-src from them too if you wish.)

deb http://www.beerorkid.com/compiz dapper main
deb http://ubuntu.compiz.net/ dapper main

If you use aiglx, add ' aiglx' to the end of the line (so it reads 'main aiglx')

Then, save and exit the editor and run one of these commands (again, various mirrors) to add my key.

Default plugin keyboard shortcuts

There are many configuration options under Compiz->General->Screen0->Options.

* Switch windows = Alt + Tab
* Arrange and View All Windows = Moving the pointer to the top right screen corner turns on or off; clicking a window will zoom it to the front
* Switch desktops on cube = Ctrl + Alt + Left/Right Arrow
* Switch desktops on cube - with active window following = Ctrl + Shift + Alt + Left/Right Arrow
* Rotate cube manually = Ctrl + Alt + left-click and grab an empty desktopspace.
* Make window translucent/opaque = possible with the "transset" utility or Alt + wheel mouse
* Zoom-in once = Super-key right-click
* Zoom-in manually = Super-key + wheel mouse up
* Zoom-out manually = Super-key + wheel mouse down
* Move window = Alt + left-click
* Snap Move window (will stick to borders) = Ctrl + Shift + left-click
* Resize window = Alt + right-click
* Bring up the window below the top window = Alt + middle-click
* Slow-motion = Shift + F10
* Water = hold Ctrl+Super key
o Rain = Shift-F9

"Super-key" means the Linux respectively W** key.

After surf the forum in Uubutuclub.com, a man? reply my post about adding fonts into Ubuntu. I said that copy a fonts from Windows (tahoma) to be in Ubuntu. Let's see, He noted me at the bottom of the him context!! Let me remind that I am stucking avoid a copyright which I posted in the forum and I will go out there, So he read it (thank you and more reply)

So, I think it is better I don't know any a person idea! It's mean that I have to be accept all the feedback what I said and wrote in the public.. generally, that the point of any person about their own royality.!!

After run the configuration of "dosfsck -ar../dev/hda1 and 5 " and said 'yes' 'no' 'ok' followed up the direction then ..

the big problem I faced !! it was the terible access to xp .. I wasted my night to try to figure out that how i should do and what i can do .... OMG... >>>

Surprise.. I should the right way,,!!

1.) fdisk /MBR
2.) Desktop-ubuntu CD
3.) Run Disk partition
4.) fisk with dos
5.) re-install winXP (other will be not installed and prefered to use a familiar OS one)
6.) Edit boot.ini
7.) I will careful higher than I am..

- Undo: Number of steps = 20
- Graphic cache: User for OpenOffice.org = 64
- Memory per object = 16
- โ หลด OO.o เร็วขึ้น OpenOffice.org quickstarter -> Load OpenOffice.org during system start-up -> checked .. ทำแล้วจะมีโปรแกรม Quick Starter ฝังอยู่ในหน่วยความจำประมาณ 20 MB
ถ้าเมนูหรือ UI แสดงผลเพี้ยน เลือก Tools -> Options -> View -> Use system font for user interface -> unchecked อาจจะดีขึ้น
เปลี่ยนขนาดไอคอนบนทูลบาร์ Tools -> Options -> View -> Icon Size and Style -> Small

.........ตั้งแต่ ผมจำความได้ กับการใช้คอมพิวเตอร์ครั้งแรก ก็สัมผัสกับหน้าจอดำๆ ของ MS-DOS ตอนนั้น รู้สึกได้ถึงความตื่นเต้นกับเทคโนโลยี ที่เพิ่งเข้ามาในชีวิต จนอดคิดไม่ได้ว่านั่นคือ "สุดยอด" หลังจากนั้นไม่นาน หน้าตาคอมพิวเตอร์ก็เปลี่ยนไป มีหน้าต่างที่สามารถเปิดขึ้นได้หลาย ๆ บานพร้อมๆ กัน มีชื่อว่า MS-Windows 3.1 และไปสู่ MS-Windows 98 ซึ่ง หน้าต่างรุ่นนี้ นี่เอง ที่เป็นจุดพลิกผันชีวิตของผม ให้รู้จักกับคำว่า Operating System (OS) กับ Software ซึ่งผมต้องหาทั้งสองสิ่งนี้ เพื่อเพิ่มเติมทักษะ และการใช้งาน แต่เนื่องจาก ทั้งสองสิ่งนี้ เราเองไม่สามารถเขียน หรือ พัฒนาโปรแกรมขึ้นมาใช้งานเองได้ (เขียนโปรแกรมไม่เป็น !!) เพราะสินค้าทุกตัวมีลิขสิทธิ์ และมีราคาแพง ดังนั้นเอง จึงทำผมให้คุ้นเคยกับ software ละเมิดลิขสิทธิ์ ตั้งแต่บัดนั้น จนกระทั่ง ได้รู้จักกับคำว่า “Linux”

........ครั้น เมื่ออดรนทนรอไม่ได้ว่า Linux คืออะไร จนกระทั่ง ได้ลิ้มลอง LinuxTLE5 เป็นครั้งแรก บอกได้คำเดียว ว่ามันแทบไม่ต่างกันเลย กับ Windows ที่ใช้งานอยู่ในตอนนั้น การใช้งานถือว่าใช้ได้ แต่ว่า..... ผมเป็นแค่ user ที่มีความสนใจในเทคโนโลยีเท่านั้น จึงไม่รู้ว่าจะปรับปรุง (configuration) อะไร ยังไง คำศัพท์ คำแสลง ต่าง ๆ บอกได้คำเดียวว่า งงงงงงงงงงงง....มากกกกกกกกกครับ แต่ความพยายามของผมไม่ได้หยุด อยู่แค่นั้น.... Internet สามารถช่วยผมได้ครับ ผมจึงได้ลองหลายๆ distro อาทิ Redhat, Mandrake, Suse และ ที่ทำให้ผมต้องหยุด และศึกษาเพิ่มเติม ก็คือ Ubuntu.

......Ubuntu ให้ชีวิตใหม่กับผม ผมเริ่มทำความคุ้นเคยกับ Ubuntu 4.10 เป็นต้นมา และเป็นบ่อเกิด แห่งความรู้ ความสนใจ หลากหลายด้านของ Linux. เมื่อ Ubuntu 6.06 LTS ปล่อยมาให้ได้ใช้กัน ผมก็ไม่รั้งรอที่ใช้งาน สิ่งแรกที่ประทับใจ คือ CD image ที่รวมความสามารถแบบ two-in-one (Live & Install CD) ซึ่งมี Installer ตัวใหม่ที่น่าชื่นชม ด้วย gpart ที่ใช้งานง่ายเกินคาด ทำให้แบ่ง partition ได้ง่ายดาย และครั้นเมื่อ installed เรียบร้อยแล้ว อาจจะเป็นเพราะ ผมติดตาม screenshot รุ่นที่ปล่อยออกมา อยู่ตลอด ดังนั้น จึงไม่ค่อยตื่นเต้นกับหน้าตามากนัก แต่ที่สำคัญ ความรู้สึกถึงความดึงดูด ที่มาพร้อมกับ gnome 2.14 นั้นทำให้ Ubuntu สวยงาม และน่าใช้งานมาก อ้อที่สำคัญ Ubuntu ไม่มีปัญหากับ Labtop ของผม และมากกว่านั้น คนที่คิดจะเริ่ม Linux คำตอบเดียวคือ “Ubuntu” ครับ และเวลาเดียวกันนี้เองก็มีสิ่งหนึ่งเกิดขึ้นในใจของผมนั่นคือ ผมจะเริ่มหันหลังให้กับ .หน้าต่าง. ที่ก้าวสู่ยุคครอบงำอย่างเต็มรูปแบบ

......เพราะ Ubuntu, ดังนั้น ผมจึงตระหนัก และคิดว่าจะไม่ละเมิดลิขสิทธิ์ปัญญา software ของผู้อื่นอีก ทั้งการซื้อและใช้ อย่างไม่ถูกต้อง แล้วค่อย ๆ เรียนรู้กับหลากหลาย software ที่ผู้รู้ พร้อมให้ได้ใช้กัน และพร้อมที่จะก้าวไปปิดหน้าต่าง เพื่อไปสู่ humanity to others….
